Hey all,
Barcelona is great! Even though I got off to a HORRIBLE start, we both LOVE the city know! It is insanely hot (too hot for me) Kristina thinks its just "warm" though, I am going to die in Madrid and Southern Spain.
Kristina obviously ended up here and not in Paris, but her flight to London was delayed and she thought she would miss her connection to Barcelona but running through the airport got her on the plane right before it boarded! She got her at around 11 ( I think) I was sleeping a fever off. I fell asleep in my sweatshirt with two blankets on (in eighty plus degree weather) FREEZING. Definately had a fever. Am much better now though. We went to bed shortly after she got her and then we slept till 1130, I slept like 14 hours that night! But I felt much better.
For all you that were worried, fear not we have found many McDonalds. I know you were all worried as to what we would eat when I said I didn´t find any. We started our first day out eating at McDonalds, haha. We then got on a bus tour and took multiple tours through the city for many
hours, seeing everything. After that, we went to Casa Batllo by Antonio Guadi. He was this crazy ass designer who designed a ton of crazy and amazing stuff in Barcelona. Look him up on google and see the stuff, its awesome! He doesn´t use straight lines in anything he does, so needless to say the houses come out pretty crazy, and colorful. We spent over an hour in this apartment house thing and then went and got gelato and then pizza! Sound farmiliar? The three things we ate yesterday was ALL we ate last year in Europe. We were very happy and excited to find gelato and pizza all over the place! After that we walked on La Rambla a bit then went back to the hostel, it was late and everything was closed.
The next day (today) we got up early and took the bus to La Sagrada Familia. It is another amazing Gaudi creation, a church that he was working on when he died in 1926. It is still being worked on today and is insane and crazy, it looks like a giant sand castle. You should google La Sagrada Familia in google too, it looks SO awesome! It is really tall and I was freaking out on the stairs because I have a semi fear of heights. After that we shopped a little and then ate at Pizza Hut, it was yummy. We are really exploring different culutral foods this time on the trip, if you couldn´t tell.
After pizza hut, we took the bus to El Pac Guell, another Gaudi creation. Pretty much he did everything important in Barcelona. Again, look this place up on Google, it was amazing!! The coolest park by far we have ever been to. Kristina says Gaudi is now her favorite artist/creator ever. He was crazy, he must have not ever slept. Today was insanely hot, especially here because there was no shade, but it had a sweeping view of the ocean, which is so beautiful. Barcelona is soo pretty.
After that, we tried unsuccesfully to take the Metro to a palace, got off on the wrong stop. Had to ask where we were going, then had to get back on the Metro and pay again, grrr. We eventually made it to the National Palace, which, on the outside, is the most pretty palace we think in all of Europe that we have seen. It sits atop a hill and you can see all of Barcelona. The inside is now a stupid mummy museum so we didn´t go in.
After that we got back on the bus and took it to an awesome cathedrel in the gothic quarter and walked through the gothic quarter where a really, really wieird Canadian girl showed us around.
After that we went to McDonalds for some dinner and found our old only friend in Europe, Ronald McDonald. We posed for some pictures with him recreating poses from last year. He seems to follow us around wherever we go...
After that we went back to the hostel and just hung out. We did a ton today and were tired. Tomorrow we are going to the beach (yay!) and another Gaudi house. Then we fly to Madrid.
When we got back to the hostel today, Kristina realized that an old family heirloom had been stolen. She said it may have been a wedding presnt to her parent´s, or from her grandparent´s house. Someone stole her old ass towel from her bed!!!! HAHA! Why someone would steal it, we have no idea. But now she has no towel, lol. It sucks but I couldn´t stop laughing. It was flowered with fringe, it is beyond me why someone would want an old, dirty towel of someone elses, but its definately gone. She is dealing with the loss well, lol.
We got a lot of whooos and kiss sounds from guys today in creepy vans. It starts again.
I have been using my Spanish SOO much. I am so glad I know it so well, I know it better still then I realized, which is cool, I hadn´t really used it in two or so years. There have been a few slip ups though haha, Kristina asked if a vendor could put her souveiner in a house for her, rather then a box, lol (casa vs. caja). I ordered McDonalds for us today, and they only really spoke Catalan, a little Spanish, and I kept saying I wanted fries, and they kept telling me I got cookies, but I kept saying no, I want fries, eventually after a long while I realized that with happy meals you also get a dessert. We never ran into this language barrier last summer, so it is very interesting. Portugal will be interesting to say the least when they only will be speaking Portugese!!
Well I think that is all for now, I need to get some sleep so I can properly be a bum on the beach all day.
Tomorrow its off to Madrid!!
Wish us luck on finding a new towel for Kristina, it has to be tiny to fit in her bag, which might be a problem.
Talk to you all later!
Love,
K&K
