Kimberly & Kristina: Travels Take Three: May 14, 2008

Hello everyone!!

In case you weren't aware, Kristina and I are traveling again, this time we are in Central America! We are currently in Belize City, but we will be going to Guatemala and Costa Rica as well. I will include an itinerary below.

So we have now been in the city for about 24 hours, and it is very, very hot. Kristina thinks its perfect, but I think its really hot, it is in the 90's. When we landed at the Belize City airport yesterday, the first thing I said was, "where is the airport?" it is the smallest airport I have ever seen in my entire life, especially for one that serves international traffic!! The city itself is, well...interesting. A lot of people told us to not go to Belize City, because it's dangerous, nothing to do etc... Well, it is not dangerous, at least we don't feel unsafe, but there definately is nothing to do. Everyone stares at us walking around (they even stop sometimes) we are pretty much the only tourists in this city, which is really weird. Kristina says we just have to pretend like we are famous, haha, and that way we will get used to all the staring.

Our hotel is clean and ok. Except the midget shower. It comes up to our shoulders, and we are not tall! Oh, and plus it doesn't have ANY hot water, so its like bathing with a hose, yay! Nothing special, but we have a balcony overlooking the Belize River which is cool, we hung out on it last night, I read and Kristina journaled, it was very nice. Oh, and we are next to a mini dump, a pile of garbage (big pile) so, we have a really awesome view to the side of us! It is really hard to sleep here since it is so hot, I woke up around midnight (we went to bed at seven something!!!) and went to the bathroom and noticed that there was a salamander on the ceiling! Kristina got up to see it, and we both thought it was almost time to get up, but no, it was only midnight! I guess that is what happens when you go to bed at 7 though! But hey, we only got around an hour of sleep the night before.

We woke up at 7 and went and had breakfast (we are eating real, authentic food, no mcdonalds!! there aren't any in the country, haha). We had beans, eggs and these things called Johnny Cakes, think Grands Biscuits, but just the tops, and really hard. But it was actually good. We then went on a cave tubing/ziplining tour, it ended up just being Kristina and I, usually there are a lot more people. We had an awesome guide named Luis, and he even took us through another cave because it was just the two of us. I have been freaking out for awhile now about the ziplines, I am afraid of heights so I was really scared about going on them, but it was fine, they weren't scary at all, they were very short and not very high at all, we both wished they were better. After that, we went through the caves on intertubes. It was awesome! We saw lots of stalagmites and stalactites. It was on a river in the middle of a jungle! It was a really awesome experience, but it got pretty cold in the caves in the water. Sometimes the water was really shallow and we would almost get stuck and the guide would yell, "Butts up!" it was pretty funny.

After that, we had lunch. Beans and rice. Notice a trend? There will be LOTS of beans and rice for us for next few weeks! But they were spicey and good.

Now we are just relaxing and not doing much of else, there isn't anything very exciting to report yet, this city isn't all that exciting. It is really interesting though to see the culture. Everyone hangs out on the streets, most people speak Creole on a regular basis (a mix of english, spanish and african they call it "bad english") you can pick it up on occasion, but everyone speak english. When my guide found out I was a vegetarian he called me a rastafarian, haha, like the people with dred locks, like Bob Marley.

Tomorrow we are going to a tourist village built for all the cruisers too afraid to come into the city, it has lots of shopping in it, yay! After that we are going to the Belize "zoo". It is a place where rescued animals from other zoos and the entertainment industry wander around. It is supposed to be a really unique experience. Then the next day (Friday) we head to Ambergris Caye, which we are very excited about!! It has the world's biggest barrier reef after Australia.

We did have an interesting experience with a person, but she was an American, Texan to be exact. Which are in a whole different league of their own. So I was wearing a shirt that said, "Green is the new Black" ie-pro environment, save the planet, right? Well, this lady looks at it and goes, "cute shirt! Green totally is the new black! Even in hollywood the stars are painting their nails green!" Kristina and just looked at eachother, it was funny lol, some people...but, what can you excpect, shes a Texan, and she had a perm and was wearing blue eye shadow and pink lipstick. HAHA!

Alright, thats about it for now kids. Hopefully the next one will be a little more interesting. Oh, and Kristina wants to eat an iguana.

See you all later!! Thanks to everyone who donated stuff to our garage sale and/or helped us out, especially Kristina's dad. We made almost $1000-woohoo!!

Talk to you soon,

Kimberly and Kristina
